John Stanley Gardiner was born on 24 January 1872 in Belfast. He was educated at Marlborough College and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1902, he was appointed demonstrator of animal morphology at the University of Cambridge, a post he held until 1908, and from 1903 until 1909 served as dean of Gonville and Caius College.
